When you get to the lake (via private driver or share shuttle) you're free to explore the lake by boat and stay in whatever town or village interests you as opposed to staying where you can drive and find protected parking. It's not cheap but is one of those 'worth the splurge' things on that route in my opinion, especially since it's your 1st visit to Guatemala and if you aren't fluent in Spanish. You would ride in comfort in a nice vehicle, get to interact with a local, probably learn some interesting things about the culture and the country, and are likely to get where you want to be much more quickly than either the share shuttle or renting a car would provide. You could make planned (the Iximché Maya site is a cool option and there are some places love to eat and view points en route) and unplanned stops. You'd be met as you exit the airport by a driver with your name on the sign. In my opinion a better option is to hire a private driver. If you were traveling from Antigua to Panajachel, they work better than they do on the GC to Pana route. They're not especially comfortable, run on very limited schedules, and the Guatemala City to Panajachel shuttles all stop in Antigua which can double the amount of time the trip takes. The share shuttles are relatively inexpensive, easy to arrange, and an opportunity to meet other travelers. I think once you got out of Guatemala City (a tough task for many) the navigating would be ok, but it would be more stressful for both of you - tough to look around and enjoy the view when you're driving in a strange place. Imho it doesn't make sense to rent a car because it will not be useful at the lake - the best and safest way of getting around there is by boat and you'd have to choose only from the smaller (and generally more expensive) pool of hotels with protected parking.
